You also have an extended timing chain warranty so even more reason not to worry. BMW also made engine revisions and supposedly the timing chain issue isn't as prevalent in the 2014+ models. And like said, you'll wanna listen to it at rpm, not idle. You can't really go by noise on these engines as there is so much other ancillary noise in the engine bay that the chain would have to be extremely loose for you to hear any noticeable sounds of chain tensioner rattle. You've also only driven the car 30k in 4.5 years so I'd say keep doing your yearly inspection and if you ever notice the tensioner is fully extended then it will be time to look into timing chain replacement.
#TIMING CHAIN REPLACEMENT MODS#
Mods don't really have an effect on the timing chain workings so I wouldn't worry too much about that. I know there are some instances of premature wear but I don't think it's something you need to actively worry about. Timing chain guides usually last a lot longer than 55k. No shiny bits or metal in the oil filter, and car still runs fine. That gets us to today where I am simply concerned for my guides and what others think of what's going on. In december 2021 I then swapped to a high flow ER down pipe, no tuning yet. Then in November 2021 that I changed the intercooler, TIC pipe and charge pipe. It wasn't until October 2020 that I introduced mods to the car, with the dinantronics sports tuner as the only engine mod, set to the second setting. I know the first few OCI's are quite far apart, this was before I knew too much about how oil worked in these vehicles.

I know these 4 cylinders are louder anyways, but I'm very cautious as I know how fragile those plastic time bombs of a guide are.

Today I got around to my oil change and was doing my annual timing chain check by gently pushing a flat head against the chain to see how much play there was.Īs of late it seems the car has been louder than normal.
